 From The Adirondack Daily Enterprise:

“(Bob) Pettee … plays the title character de Rougemont, a grand storyteller in the late 1800s … He is aided by “volunteers from the audience,” Mackenzie Barmen and Tyler Nye, who play a cast of characters ranging from de Rougemont’s mother to his fellow sailors to his aboriginal wife and father- and brother-in-law. Nye’s take on de Rougemont’s dog, Bruno, is particularly well-studied and momentarily stopped the show with a round of applause during the production’s opening night Wednesday.”

“The concept behind the show was to play up the sense of storytelling and to celebrate theater … Using those bare-bones production techniques makes the show seem to grow organically out of de Rougemont’s imagination.”

Shipwrecked! An Entertainment opens August 15th at Pendragon Theatre

The family friendly entertainment tells the tale of the real life Louis de Rougemont and his incredible 30 year adventure in the Australian outback after being lost at sea.

Pulitzer Prize playwright Donald Marguiles creates a colorful, fanciful canvas that the New York Times labeled “a theatrical pop-up book.” When asked if he had a particular “aesthetic” in mind, he replied:
“It gets everyone to play again. People who maybe have lost that sense of play and have forgotten how enjoyable it could be to just imagine things. That was my objective.”

Bob Pettee plays Louis de Rougement, the Victorian adventurer and yarn-spinner. Mackenzie Barmen and Tyler Nye play multiple characters including children, society gossips, aborigines, scientists, and Bruno, the dog.

Karen Kirkham, Pendragon’s incoming Executive and Artistic Director, directs the highly imaginative production. She continues her long time collaboration with award winning Set Designer, Tijana Bjelajac. Alexis Foster, Costume Designer at SUNY Potsdam, outfits all of the characters. Current Technical Director and succeeding Managing Director David Zwierankin is the Lighting Designer.

Shipwrecked! plays August 15th, 16th, 18th, 21st, 24th, 25th, 30th, 31st and September 1st at 8 PM and Sunday, August 19th at 2 PM. It joins Pinocchio, The Last Five Years, and So In Love: Cole Porter Cabaret already in repertory.

And A Nightingale Sang opens July 3rd at Pendragon Theatre

British playwright C. P. Taylor’s And A Nightingale Sang centers around the hopes, foibles, and strength of a quirky family during the course of World War II. The charming, bittersweet, and often hilarious play evolved from an oral history project commissioned by Newcastle upon Tyne’s Live Theatre Company.

“There are literary playwrights who can wow us with big themes and dazzling language. But no less valuable are the overlooked playwrights who can bring ordinary people to life with all their comic flaws, crushing losses, and stubborn hopes.” – Baltimore City Paper

Director Susan Neal: “I love this play for many reasons, but primarily because it celebrates the indomitable human spirit.”

The ensemble includes: Mackenzie Barmen, Jordan Hornstein, Chris McGovern, Donna Moschek, Tyler Nye, Brandon Patterson, and Binnie Ritchie-Holum.

The Pendragon production is a limited run: July 3rd, 5th, 6th, 11th, 12th, 19th, 24th, 25th, August 4th, 7th, 8th at 8 PM and a 2 PM matinee on August 5th.

Pendragon’s 32nd summer season includes performances of Pinocchio, The Last Five Years, The 39 Steps (limited run opening July 18th) and Shipwrecked! (opening August 15th).
